RCW 108 – A Southern Furnace of Stars

RCW 108 is a rich and dramatic emission nebula region in the southern sky, surrounded by vast fields of hydrogen, oxygen, sulphur, and dark interstellar dust. This area is full of complex structure, with sweeping filaments, dense dust lanes, and glowing clouds shaped by young stars forming within the surrounding molecular material. For this image, I wanted to bring out the depth and turbulence of the region, especially the contrast between the bright blue/cyan nebulosity and the warmer golden-orange filaments that arc across the field. The darker lanes cutting through the centre give the image a strong sense of dimension, almost as if the glowing gas is being torn open by the surrounding dust. One of my favourite parts of this frame is the small, vivid blue structure on the right-hand side, which adds a beautiful visual counterpoint to the larger nebula complex. It gives the image a sense of scale and helps show just how active and varied this region is. Processing this target was focused on balancing the delicate faint outer nebulosity with the stronger central structures, while preserving the fine filamentary detail and the dense star field surrounding the nebula.
